ALL Norton Users Disable Immediately

Don’t find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain. ~~Henry Ford

Better late than never?
Disable Symantec’s  pcAnyware software immediately if not sooner.  Someone  stole the code in 2006 and they are finally getting around to telling all users, you are under dire threat

It starts here
Quote: “…its pcAnywhere software for accessing remote PCs is at increased risk of getting hacked after blueprints of that software were stolen.” says Symantec.

It has been missing SIX WHOLE YEARS and they still do not have an update for ‘business critical purpose” users?

Doesn’t it make you feel all warm and fuzzy to know that you must use the most current version of the product BUT still “understand the current risks,” which include the possibility that hackers could steal data or credentials.”

Disable it? Methinks if I was a business using this product, my first act would be to replace it period.

There is more – lots more
It gets worse. That blueprint theft includes several other titles: Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, Norton Internet Security, Norton Utilities and Norton GoBack.

The threat, read this white paper (
The back tracking, read this one (

Warning Quote!!  ‘Due to all the hidden files Norton will place on your computer, if you want to fully uninstall ALL Symantec utilities, is that a complete OS purge including a re-format and re-install of the system boot disk is necessary. There is no easy way to completely uninstall and purge ALL Symantec utility links, records, files etc.

If you work with a good tec shop and they know their stuff, it may be possible for them to do this a lot quicker and safer than your fingers trying to do a simple uninstall.
Our attempts show at least 2000 hidden files that Norton installs into your system.  So a simple add/remove uninstall or even a Norton uninstall will not clean your machine of those hidden files.  Let the professionals remove this program for you.

My personal  replacement recommendation is ZoneAlarm Extreme Security. We have been using this program from when it was simply ZoneAlarm and have never been shut down for virus issues.  Like any good security program, you need to pay attention and check out your moves before you make them. ZoneAlarm can be weakened by bad choices.

  1. George Culp says:

I have to concur with your opinion about ZoneAlarm.

Being a ZoneAlarm user for the past several years, I can testify to the fact that it beats Norton programs hands down.

After installing ZoneAlarm, it is necessary to put it in “learning mode”. It will ask you
before it approves any action regarding access. Just be careful and thorough in reading the information provided before “Allowing” access to a program or service on your computer.
